The right crate lets your dog sit, stand and lie down comfortably, without being so big that one end becomes a bathroom. Instead of guessing from weight, measure your dog: two numbers for a home crate, four for an airline crate.

Home crate: the AKC method

The American Kennel Club’s advice:

  1. With your dog standing, measure from the top of the head to the floor (height). If the ears stand up higher, measure to the ear tips.
  2. Measure from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail (length).
  3. Add 3 to 4 inches to each measurement.

Crate interior length = dog's length + 3 to 4 in
Crate interior height = dog's height + 3 to 4 in

Crates are named by size or length, and the inside is smaller than the outside, so compare your numbers with the interior dimensions in the product listing.

Air travel: the IATA minimum

For flying, airlines follow the International Air Transport Association’s Live Animals Regulations. Container Requirement 1 uses four measurements of the standing dog:

Measurement How to take it
A Tip of the nose to the base (root) of the tail
B Floor to the elbow joint
C Width across the shoulders, or the widest point if wider
D Floor to the top of the head or the ear tip, whichever is higher

Length = A + ½ B
Width = 2 × C
Height = D + bedding

IATA adds that snub-nosed breeds require a 10% larger container. IATA doesn’t say which dimension, so the calculator adds 10% to all three. Airlines can be stricter than IATA, so check with yours before you buy.

Worked examples

Example 1: home crate for a dog 30 in long (nose to tail tip) and 24 in tall. Length 30 + 3 to 4 = 33–34 in. Height 24 + 3 to 4 = 27–28 in. Look for a crate with at least 33 × 27 in inside.

Example 2: airline crate, A = 26 in, B = 12 in, C = 8 in, D = 24 in. Length = 26 + 12 ÷ 2 = 32 in. Width = 2 × 8 = 16 in. Height = 24 in plus bedding.

Example 3: the same dog, snub-nosed. +10%: length 35.2 in, width 17.6 in, height 26.4 in plus bedding.

Limitations

  • Measure, don’t guess. Two dogs of the same weight can need different crates. Measure twice, with your dog standing naturally.
  • Puppies grow. Size the crate for the expected adult and use a divider, as the AKC suggests.
  • Not a welfare plan. A crate that fits is only part of crate training; how long a dog spends inside matters too. Your vet or a trainer can help with that.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure my dog for a crate?

With your dog standing, measure from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail for length, and from the top of the head to the floor for height. The AKC says to add 3 to 4 inches to each measurement.

Can a crate be too big?

Yes. The AKC says you want a roomy crate but not one that's too large, because a dog may eliminate in one end and sit away from the mess in the other.

What size crate for a puppy?

The AKC suggests an expandable crate as large as the typical adult size of your dog's breed, with a divider you move as the puppy grows. Our puppy weight calculator can help you guess the adult size.

Why is the airline crate bigger than my home crate?

IATA, whose rules most airlines follow, uses its own formula: length = nose to base of tail plus half the leg height, width = twice the shoulder width, and height = standing height plus bedding. The dog must be able to stand, sit, lie down and turn around.

Is there a crate size chart by weight?

We couldn't find one from a veterinary or kennel organization; size-by-weight charts come from crate sellers and differ between brands. Dogs of the same weight can have very different shapes, so measuring is more reliable.
