Cost of Owning a Dog per Year: Calculator
Before getting a dog, or when budgeting for the one you have, it helps to see the costs line by line. The calculator starts from the ASPCA’s published estimates and lets you change every amount. Nothing you enter leaves your browser.
Where the defaults come from
The ASPCA’s “Cutting Pet Care Costs” page (labeled 2021 update) lists these figures for a dog:
| Annual cost | ASPCA estimate |
|---|---|
| Food | $300 |
| Routine medical | $225 |
| Preventive medication | $185 |
| Health insurance | $516 |
| Treats | $60 |
| Toys | $37 |
| Grooming supplies | $28 |
| License | $15 |
| Kennel/boarding ($25 per day; the ASPCA total includes one day) | $25 |
| Annual total | $1,391 |
| One-time cost (first year) | ASPCA estimate |
|---|---|
| Spay/neuter | $300 |
| Initial medical | $300 |
| Training class | $200 |
| Collar and leash | $60 |
| Crate | $60 |
| Carrier | $50 |
| Grooming tools | $40 |
| Microchip | $20 |
| Initial total | $1,030 |
The ASPCA’s first-year total of $3,221 also includes professional grooming ($300) and dental care ($500). Because many dogs don’t need both every year, the calculator lists them as optional yearly lines set to $0; enter the ASPCA figures (or your own) if they apply to your dog.
How the calculator adds it up
Yearly cost = sum of recurring lines
Monthly cost = yearly cost ÷ 12
First-year cost = yearly cost + sum of one-time lines
Worked examples
Example 1: the ASPCA defaults as they are. Yearly: $1,391 (about $116 per month). First year: $1,391 + $1,030 = $2,421.
Example 2: adding grooming and dental care as the ASPCA does. Yearly: $1,391 + $300 + $500 = $2,191. First year: $2,191 + $1,030 = $3,221, which matches the ASPCA’s first-year total.
Example 3: no insurance. Set insurance to $0: yearly $875 (about $73 per month). The biggest line becomes food. Keep in mind the risk of an unplanned vet bill.
How to make the estimate your own
- Food: use our dog food calculator for daily calories, then price the bag you buy: calories per day × 365 ÷ calories per bag × price per bag.
- Vet care and preventives: ask your clinic for its exam, vaccine and parasite-prevention prices. They vary by region.
- Insurance: get a quote for your dog’s breed, age and ZIP code.
- Boarding and pet sitting: if you travel, multiply your local daily rate by the days you’re away.
Limitations
- The ASPCA figures are national averages from 2021, not prices in your area today.
- Emergencies, chronic illness and old-age care are not included and can cost far more than routine care.
- Costs not listed (dog walking, daycare, fencing, replacing chewed items, travel) are up to you to add.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a dog cost per year?
The ASPCA's estimate (2021 update) is $1,391 per year in recurring costs for a dog, and $3,221 for the first year once one-time costs like spay/neuter, initial vet care, training and supplies are added. Your costs depend on your dog's size, health, where you live and the choices you make.
Why are the defaults from 2021?
They are the most recent itemized figures the ASPCA publishes. Prices for food and vet care may be higher today, so treat them as a starting point and replace any line with a quote from your own vet, store or insurer.
Is pet insurance included?
Yes, the ASPCA estimate includes $516 per year for health insurance. If you won't buy insurance, set that line to 0, but consider setting money aside for unexpected vet bills instead.
Does this include emergencies?
No. The ASPCA figures cover routine costs. Accidents and illnesses are unpredictable, which is the main argument for insurance or an emergency fund.
Does a bigger dog cost more?
Usually, for food, preventive medication (often dosed by weight) and boarding, but the ASPCA figures are a single average. Adjust the food and preventive lines for your dog.
